Your weekly dose of sports betting tips, news and humor, every Saturday at 10am Eastern.

Fading Argentina in the World Cup – While the markets have Lionel Messi and Argentina as the second favorite behind Brazil, the numbers disagree. It doesn’t matter whether you look at team based metrics like my rankings at The Power Rank or player based metrics like those of Twenty First Group.

You can fade Argentina by betting another team to win Group C. Mexico has a high floor but low ceiling as an international team; they have made it out of their group and lost in the Round of 16 in the last seven World Cups.

Poland is a solid European team, well organized and 22nd in my rankings. They have the luxury of goal scoring machine Robert Lewandowski of FC Barcelona.

My numbers give Mexico and Poland a 18.2% and 19.5% chance to winning the group. This suggests value in betting both at +550 at FanDuel to win Group C.

Washington at Houston, NFL Week 11 – Pro bettor Rob Pizzola notes that Washington QB Taylor Heinicke has had 10 turnover worthy plays in his last 4 starts. Only half of those plays turned into actual turnovers. His 6.9% turnover worth play rate is highest among all QBs starting this week by a 1.3% gap.

Rob isn’t high on Houston QB Davis Mills but notes that he protects the ball well. Mills has produced a 100.5 QB rating in 11 career home starts, a massive improvement from his 71.3 QB rating away from home. Houston comes off of a very misleading loss in which they made six trips into the Giants red zone and came away with one touchdown.

Rob likes Houston +3 at home. You can check out all of the great work Rob and his team do over at the sports betting media company The Hammer.

College basketball predictions – This a sample of predictions available to members of The Power Rank.

  • Gonzaga will beat Kentucky by 3.4 points at home. Gonzaga got beat down by 19 points at Texas as a 2 point underdog. They are favored to get back to their winning ways at home against Kentucky.
  • Michigan will beat Ohio by 15.8 points at home. Michigan lost to Arizona State by 25 as a 7 point favorite in Brooklyn this week. That’s what happens when a team goes 4-22 from three. They should rebound against a MAC opponent at home.
  • Indiana will beat Miami (OH) by 25.8 at a neutral site. Indiana got a tough 2 point road win at Xavier on Friday night as Trayce Jackson-Davis had 30 points. It should be much easier against Miami Ohio at neutral site in Indianapolis.

College basketball predictions get posted the day before games for members of The Power Rank to take advantage of opening lines.

USC at UCLA – The total in this rivalry game opened at 82.5, but it has since moved to 76.5 as of Saturday morning. There is more to this drop than the sticker shock of a total in the 80s.

On Wednesday’s Bet the Board podcast, Brad Powers notes the abysmal field conditions at the Rose Bowl as an undercover factor that may limit both dynamic offenses. Brad has watched more than 100 games at the Rose Bowl over three-plus decades and has never seen the field as sloppy as it was in UCLA’s upset loss to Arizona last Saturday.

If we see similar conditions tonight, it’ll be an uphill battle for the Trojans and Bruins to light up the scoreboard, regardless of the edges the offenses will have over the defenses.

Key Injuries – The NFL injury information comes from ESPN, while the college football information comes from USA Today unless otherwise noted.

  • Arizona QB Kyler Murray is a game time decision because of a hamstring injury against San Francisco (game in Mexico City on Monday night). Back up Colt McCoy, who played last week against the Los Angeles Rams, has been limited in practice this week because of a knee injury.
  • Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson is questionable against Carolina because of an illness.
  • Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford is off the injury list (concussion) and will play against New Orleans.
  • Arkansas QB KJ Jefferson is probable to play against Mississippi after missing last week against LSU with a shoulder injury.
  • Minnesota QB Tanner Morgan is questionable against Iowa with an upper body injury.
  • Oklahoma State QB Spencer Sanders has missed the last two games. While he is listed as questionable against Oklahoma in the Bedlam rivalry game, Sanders told the media that he will play.

Limiting sharps – The Washington Post ran an excellent profile of the difficulties faced by professional sports bettors, as online sports books have gotten more aggressive with limiting sharp bettors. The article calls out DraftKings, BetMGM and PointsBet as the books most likely to limit sharps, while Caesars and WynnBET offer the highest limits.

While you should have some healthy skepticism over how main stream media covers sports betting, the Post did speak with pro bettors Rufus Peabody, Rob Pizzola and Spanky and book maker Chris Andrews of South Point. This article is definitely worth your time.

NFL humor – First and 10 deep in enemy territory. What play should you call? How about having a running back throw to a 45 year old QB? What could possibly go wrong?

Okay, what just happened?! 👀

Fournette was aiming for Brady, but @_Tariqwoolen intercepts it! #Seahawks

Your weekly dose of sports betting tips, news and humor, every Saturday at 10am Eastern.

Jacksonville at Kansas City – While professional bettor Rob Pizzola is fond of the Chiefs, he notes their defense has given up 20 or more points in all but one game this season. That one game? It was against Tennessee rookie QB Malik Willis this past Sunday night.

Betting a big underdog like Jacksonville +9.5 is appealing considering their likelihood to score more than 20 points. The Jags are 4th in the league in net success rate and 6th in offensive passing success rate.

They have been competitive when they cut out the red zone turnovers, and the Chiefs offenses isn’t as explosive as in years past. Check out all the great work Rob and company do over at The Hammer.

TCU at Texas – While TCU is undefeated and 4th in the most recent college football playoff rankings, they are more than a touchdown underdog at Texas this week. The Power Rank member numbers agree with the spread (prediction of a 7.8 point win for Texas).

However, the total might be more interesting than the spread.

On Wednesday, most of the market had a total of 64.5. However, the Unabated line, which comes from an ensemble of sharp sports books, had a total of 65.5. In addition, The Power Rank member numbers predict 68 total points.

As of Saturday morning, the TCU at Texas total has moved a point to 65.5. This market movement suggests value in combining the top down approach with the Unabated line with the bottom up modeling of The Power Rank.

Dark horse World Cup contender – On The Football Analytics Show, Ryan O’Hanlon of ESPN talked about how he liked Denmark to have an outside shot to win the World Cup. This team made it to the semi-finals of Euro 2020 played in 2021 without their best player, Christian Eriksen.

In addition, Ryan talks about how analytics has revealed value in set pieces (free kicks, corners) in his new book Net Gains. Denmark has been at the forefront of this data driven thinking, as professional bettor Matthew Benham bought the Danish club Midtjylland and used set pieces to turn them into the winner.

Ryan thinks the national team will also benefit from set pieces. With Eriksen back, he likes Denmark as a dark horse to win the World Cup (Denmark is +2750 at Circa).

Key injuries – The NFL injuries are obtained from ESPN. The college football information is from USA Today.

  • Arizona QB Kyler Murray is questionable against the Los Angeles Rams with a hamstring injury.
  • Buffalo QB Josh Allen has a right elbow injury and is questionable against Minnesota. Circa has Buffalo -3 as of Saturday morning, which suggests that Allen is unlikely to play.
  • Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford is questionable against Arizona with a concussion.
  • Tennessee QB Ryan Tannehill has missed the last two games with an ankle injury and is questionable against Denver.
  • Coastal Carolina QB Grayson McCall is out for the season with a foot injury.
  • Indiana QB Connor Bazelak missed the last game with an unknown injury and is on track to play against Ohio State.
  • Oklahoma State QB Spencer Sanders missed the previous game with an unknown injury, and he is questionable against Iowa State.
  • Syracuse QB Garrett Schrader didn’t play last week and is questionable against Florida State. Syracuse had a 20.7% passing success rate without Shrader last week (40.2% college football average).
  • Texas A&M Connor Weigman sat out the last game with the flu but should start over Haynes King against Auburn.

Seattle vs Tampa Bay in Germany – On Props & Hops midweek market movement show Between the Lines, German professional bettor Fabian Sommer notes the NFL boomed in his native land in 2013-14. The Legion of Boom was in full force, and Seahawks became the most popular franchise in Germany.

As Fabian puts it: “If you ask 10,000 Germans what their favorite franchise is, the biggest piece of the pie would be the Seahawks.”

Fabian also notes the flight from Seattle to Munich is roughly the same distance as the flight from Tampa Bay to Munich (don’t ask Kyrie Irving to explain why). As of Saturday morning, most books have Bucs -2.5.

Bet early in college football – Analyst Andrew Percival looked at how often you win betting the opening line in the direction that the market closes. In essence, he has calculated your win rate against the opening spread when you have 100% closing line value.

The data is from Sports Book Reviews Online, a site that tracks opening and closing college football data from 5Dimes sports book. The results are staggering.

For example, Andrew found a win rate of 57.2% when betting the opening line and the market moves two or more points. Check out his tweet for more comprehensive results.

College football humor – “Maybe Bryce can make something happen?” SEC Shorts is merciless now that the Crimson Tide won’t make the College Football Playoff.

Alabama gets to "win" the Playoff for a day.

Your weekly dose of sports betting tips, news and humor, every Saturday morning at 10am Eastern.

Detroit Lions future – On an episode of the Props & Hops podcast, professional bettor Hitman broke down the value on the Lions to finish under 5.5 regular season wins in the aftermath of the trade deadline. This is essentially a bet against Detroit going 5-5 the rest of the way after a 1-6 start.

Hitman makes the Lions closer to a 3.8-win team after they dealt T.J. Hockenson to division rival Minnesota. While the players and coaches on the field will still bring plenty of fight, the Hockenson move embodies Detroit’s larger organizational decision not to go all in on the rest of the season.

Los Angeles Rams at Tampa Bay, NFL Week 9 – Professional bettor Rob Pizzola notes that Tampa Bay is now 0-6 ATS in their last six games and continually gets overvalued by market as people expect them to return to form. This is a very vanilla offense that still wastes too many early downs on a running game dead last in the league in EPA.

The loss of Shaq Barrett is huge for a defense that already struggles to generate pressure. With WR Cooper Kupp, WR Van Jefferson, and C Brian Allen slated to play, there isn’t much separating the Rams from the Bucs right now.

Rob Pizzola likes Rams +3 against the Bucs. Check out all of the good work Rob and his team do over at The Hammer.

Georgia State at Southern Miss – Professional bettor Mike Craig notes that Southern Miss has been solid this season with a 5-3 record. Their losses have come to Miami (49th in The Power Rank member numbers), Liberty (68th) and Troy (62nd).

In addition, Southern Miss has a match up advantage against a Georgia State team that tends to run the ball. Southern Miss ranks 31st in adjusted success rate on running plays by The Power Rank’s metrics.

Mike likes Southern Miss at home against Georgia State, and -2 is available at DraftKings and Caesars as of Saturday morning.

Unabated NBA line – Unabated has tracked the accuracy of various sports books, and they combine the results from the sharpest books into the Unabated line. Using this metric is a top down approach to find value.

Over the past 3 days, there were 12 NBA spreads and totals each morning that differed from a value at a square book by a point or more. Making these bets would have gone 6-6. However, the market moved in the direction of the Unabated line in 8 of 12 games, a strong indictor of value.

As of 9:50am Eastern, here are the spreads and totals for the NBA on Saturday that differ from the Unabated line.

  • New Orleans at Atlanta, under 232, DraftKings
  • Phoenix -9.5 vs Portland, BetMGM

This market moves fast every morning, and value from the Unabated line disappeared in two games the hour before publication of this article. To check out all the betting tools at Unabated, click here.

Edward Golden interview – Edward Golden has won as a professional bettor for over two decades. He also founded Right Angle Sports (RAS), one of the few pick services with a long term track record of winning and honesty.

On an episode of The Football Analytics Show, Edward discussed how his handicapping starts with a belief about a team to tail or fade. Then he looks for any pieces of information to support that belief. This set of information ranges from analytics to weather.

In the end, Edward is looking for an easy decision on a spread or total. He also said that experience is critical in determining the importance of any information.

There are very few interviews with long time professional bettor Edward Golden, which makes this episode of The Football Analytics Show a must listen.

Key injuries – The NFL QB injury list is quiet this week, as Aaron Rodgers disappeared from the list even though he was limited at practice Friday with his thumb. The college football injuries come from USA Today.

  • Tennessee QB Ryan Tannehill was limited in practice Thursday because of an ankle injury, and he is questionable against Kansas City.
  • Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa didn’t play last week but should play against Wisconsin despite a knee injury.
  • Nebraska QB Casey Thompson has an elbow injury and is questionable against Minnesota.
  • Northwestern QB Ryan Hilinski hasn’t played the last two games with a concussion, and he is questionable against Ohio State.
  • Syracuse QB Garrett Shrader is questionable with an unknown injury against Pittsburgh.
  • Utah QB Cameron Rising has an injury that makes him questionable against Arizona. However, Arizona coach Jedd Fisch expects him to play.
  • Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong has a leg injury and is questionable against North Carolina.

NFL humor – DK Metcalf had a number two emergency last weekend in Detroit, and this NFL films style video captures it perfectly.

Wow, this @NFLFilms feature on @dkm14's poop cart odyssey is a 🔥RIVETING MUST WATCH!!!🔥 pic.twitter.com/VOLzbveWI3

Your weekly dose of sports betting tips, news and humor, every Saturday morning at 10am Eastern.

San Francisco at Los Angeles Rams – On this week’s episode of Between the Lines, a part of the Props & Hops podcast family, host Matt Landes and professional bettor Fabian Sommer explored the possibility of the favorite flipping from the 49ers to the Rams as kickoff approaches. Suuma’s rationale: injuries and scheduling.

The Rams are getting healthier on both sides of the ball with C Brian Allen, WR Van Jefferson and CB Troy Hill in line to return. In contrast, San Francisco will be without key players like WR Deebo Samuel.

The analysis for members of The Power Rank earlier this week suggested value on Rams +1.5. As of Saturday morning, most books have Rams +1. However, BookMaker, one of the sharpest books, favors the Rams by a point.

Follow Matt Landes for all his amazing work on the Props & Hops podcasts.

New England at the New York Jets – Professional bettor Rob Pizzola points out that the New York Jets seem better than their true skill level. They have played backup or rookie QBs in 3 of the past 4 weeks.

In addition, Zack Wilson has been on the field for 126 plays this year and ranks 27th of 31 QBs in EPA/play among players with at least the same amount of plays. Who ranks just ahead of him? Matt Ryan. Yeah, Wilson has been that bad.

Rob see value in Patriots -2.5 with Mac Jones back at QB. Check out The Hammer for all the great sports betting content that Rob and his team produce.

Digging deep for NFL information on the Packers – On The Football Analytics Show, Adam Chernoff, who recently moved to Right Angle Sports, discussed how the Packers lack cohesion on offense, and a group of young receivers make this worse.

Adam also thinks that Aaron Rodgers has an issue with his injured hand. When Rodgers appears on the Pat McAfee show, he usually does what McAfee asks of him. However, when Rogers was asked to hold up his hand and bend his thumb, he refused.

Adam has a fantastic origin story as a bookmaker in the Caribbean, and he also discussed many other NFL topics in a fantastic episode of The Football Analytics Show.

Injuries – The NFL injury information is obtained from ESPN. The college football information comes from USA Today.

  • Indianapolis QB Matt Ryan has a right shoulder sprain, but he will not be the starter when he returns. Moving forward, the Colts have decided that QB Sam Ehlinger is their starting QB.
  • Tennessee QB Ryan Tannehill didn’t practice Friday and is questionable against Houston with an ankle injury.
  • Washington QB Carson Wentz went to IR with a finger injury. Tayler Heinicke will start against Indianapolis.
  • Georgia Tech QB Jeff Sims is questionable with a sprained foot against Florida State.
  • Kansas State QB Adrian Martinez is questionable against Oklahoma State with a lower body injury. Back up Will Howard is also injured.
  • Miami QB Tyler Van Dyke has an upper body injury and is questionable against Virginia.
  • Minnesota QB Tanner Morgan didn’t play last week against Penn State with a head injury and is questionable against Rutgers.
  • Northwestern QB Ryan Hilinski is questionable against Iowa with a head injury.

Bet Bash – The third Bet Bash conference, hosted by Spanky, will take place on August 9-11, 2023 at the Circa. The first two conferences were amazing networking opportunities.

Expected goals in soccer – Analytics doesn’t have to be obtuse. Gordon Strachan, the coach of the Scottish national team from 2013 through 2017, said the following in a conversation with a quant.

So you’re just telling me the chance of scoring?

Yup, that’s all you need to know about xG. This is a concept we will use to analyze the World Cup that starts November 20th.

For more great insights into soccer analytics, check out Ryan O’Hanlon’s new book Net Gains. I am loving the book half way through.

Sports commentary – xkcd by Randall Munroe always kills it.

By Dr. Ed Feng Leave a Comment

Your weekly dose of sports betting tips, news and humor, every Saturday at 10am Eastern.

Atlanta at Cincinnati, NFL Week 7 – Cincinnati’s offense showed a lot of good things last week, as they lined up in shotgun on 52 of 54 snaps. This made both the run and pass game more effective, as they had a 60.4% success rate against New Orleans.

Pro sports bettor Rob Pizzola of The Hammer thinks the Bengals should have their way with a Falcons defense that lacks a pass rush and will miss CB Casey Hayward Jr. In addition, he points out the Falcons have played two solid opponents on the road: the Rams and Bucs. In each game, they were trailing by 18 or more points headed into the 4th quarter.

Also, the analysis that members of The Power Rank received also liked Cincinnati side. You can still find Cincinnati -6.5 on Saturday morning.

NBA win total projections – Kostya Medvedovsky, creator of the DARKO NBA player projection system, posted NBA win totals for this season. The spectrum of NBA teams ranges from Boston at the top to Detroit at the bottom.

One surprising element in his model is preseason games. Kostya has found predictive value in these seemingly meaningless games in many sports, even the NFL.

Preseason data suggests that Chicago might be undervalued, and they beat Miami on the road in their first game. The data hates LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers for the second year in a row, and the Lakers have started 0-2.

NFL teaser – With Wong teasers, you move point spreads through the key numbers of 3 and 7. However, with the volatility of the NFL this season, these teasers have gotten burnt more often than J.C. Jackson.

On this week’s Edge Rush podcast, professional bettor Hitman talked about two appealing teaser legs:

  • Indianapolis +8.5 at Tennessee
  • New England -2 vs Chicago

Hitman notes that the Indianapolis offense has hit its stride with a no huddle offense, as Matt Ryan threw for almost 400 yards against Jacksonville last week. In the second game, he likes the match up of a Bill Belichick defense against a one dimensional Chicago offense.

Even with the volatility of teasers this season, there is a strong case for the Colts and Patriots in Week 7.

College football rankings – Members of The Power Rank have access to how college football teams stack up based on data from the current season. These numbers are based on success rate, points, yards per play, all adjusted for opponent with my algorithms.

The following rankings include a rating, which gives how many points better a team is than an FBS average team, based on data from the current season.

  1. Georgia, (7-0), 29.6
  2. Ohio State, (6-0), 28.5
  3. Michigan, (7-0), 22.7
  4. Alabama, (6-1), 22.5
  5. Tennessee, (6-0), 22.4
  6. Texas, (5-2), 20.0
  7. Illinois, (6-1), 19.2
  8. TCU, (6-0), 14.4
  9. Mississippi, (7-0), 14.1
  10. LSU, (5-2), 13.6

Nick Saban had enough nightmares this week because of Jalin Hyatt. Now, he has to come to grips with falling out of the top three and slumming it with Michigan and Tennessee.

Illinois has been fantastic this season, especially on defense. Bret Bielema’s team travels to Michigan on November 19th in what could be game between teams with a total of one loss.

Members of The Power Rank have access to these numbers for all teams in the college football data file.

Injuries – The NFL injury information is obtained from ESPN. The college football information comes from USA Today.

  • New England QB Mac Jones was limited at practice Friday and is questionable with an ankle injury.
  • Carolina QB Baker Mayfield is now doubtful against Tampa Bay with an ankle injury.
  • Denver QB Russell Wilson has a hamstring injury, and coach Nathaniel Hackett said he is a game time decision against the New York Jets.
  • Washington QB Carson Wentz had surgery on his right ring finger, and he is out at least this weekend’s game against the Packers.
  • Baylor QB Blake Shapen is questionable with a head injury. Baylor plays Kansas, who will not have QB Jalon Daniels.
  • Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa is questionable against Northwestern with a lower leg injury. Northwestern QB Ryan Hilinski is also questionable with a concussion.
  • Minnesota QB Tanner Morgan is questionable against Penn State with a head injury.

Kansas State at TCU – On The Football Analytics Show, Parker Fleming explained how TCU has revived its defense after a complete disaster in 2021. Instead of a complicated defense in which former coach Gary Patterson micro managed every player, the players now have more freedom to make plays.

TCU still struggles with big plays on pass defense, but Parker doesn’t think that matters as much against Kansas State, a team that looks to break big runs with RB Deuce Vaughn and QB Adrian Martinez.

Parker’s numbers like TCU by 5 in this game, and he expects his alma mater to continue their undefeated season. To get all of Parker’s college football insights, check out the latest episode of The Football Analytics Show.

Davante Adams – Aaron Rodgers and the offense have scored 10 points in the last six quarters, and they got pounded by the Jets this past week. As spoofed by Bleacher Report’s Gridiron Heights, perhaps they miss Davante Adams?

‘Forgetting Davante Adams’ 💔

Aaron Rodgers searches to find which Packers WR will catch his heart in a new #GridironHeights pic.twitter.com/4uyA36tolU

— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) September 21, 2022

This is also my mea culpa on thinking the Packers were fine without Adams. When the world changes, I change my mind and hope it’s not small sample size.
