5-Nugget Saturday, July 19, 2025 – best recommendations of the year

Usually your curated list of sports betting tips and analytics, this is the third annual, mid-summer, Ed is on vacation list of best recommendations.

Shaquille O’Neal’s first dunk – Ever have self doubt? You know, like when you were a teenager and unsure of yourself?

In a previous edition of 5-Nuggets, I told part of the story of Shaq’s first dunk for its humor. However, the entire story reveals that even the most ferocious dunker in basketball had self doubt at a young age.

Searching for Sugarman – In South Africa, an album called Cold Fact became a viral hit for a generation of young people. The rumor was that Rodriguez, the American creator of the album, had killed himself.

Two men became so obsessed with the music that they did more research into the enigmatic artist. Searching for Sugarman is their story.

This documentary came on my radar because it appeared on every list of top documentaries I found on the internet. It in no way disappointed. Check out the trailer for Searching for Sugarman.

Old Fashioned – My primary cocktail consists of the follow proportions stirred on ice:

  • Two dashes of Angostura bitters.
  • One teaspoon of Shady Maple Farms Maple Syrup.
  • Two ounces of Elijah Craig Small Batch bourbon.
  • Three flecks of coarse sea salt.

Pour over a large ice cube, which will not melt as fast as smaller pieces of ice. After serving in a glass, you need to wait about five minutes for the cocktail to reach its peak.

You must get the proportions of sugar and bourbon as exact as you possibly can. Do not let the bourbon go above or below the line in your measuring cup. If you don’t use maple syrup, make simple syrup with high quality sugar.

This cocktail is my key to making and keeping friends.

Landman – I don’t watch many shows, but it was a joy to binge the Paramount series Landman during my downtime in April.

Billy Bob Thorton was born to play the masculine west Texas role, and his character Tommy Norris navigates the hot women and drama of the oil industry in West Texas. This high testosterone show isn’t for everyone, but I enjoyed it.

Humor – In retrospect, Back to the Future is a strange movie. A disgraced nuclear physicist teams up a high school student? Two guys had to walk into a meeting to pitch this movie to studio executives.

John Mulaney takes a hilarious approach to this meeting in one of his stand up specials. I stumbled upon it again this week and still found it hilarious.
